California CDL License Classifications

A driver wishing to drive a truck, trailer, or any other commercial vehicle in California must obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL). There are however, various different classes of license that an aspiring commercial driver needs to apply for to be able to drive a particular type of vehicle. According to license classifications information, there are three basic types of commercial driver licenses—Class A, Class B, and Class C. License classifications guidelines in California clearly state the types of vehicles a driver with a specific class of license can drive or tow; these are mentioned below:

  • License Classifications Guidelines for Those Holding Class A License: A driver holding a Class A license can drive any legal combination of vehicles that also includes vehicles under classes B and C. He may also tow any vehicle under classes B and C, a single vehicle that has a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of more than 10,000lbs, and any trailer bus or multiple vehicles with endorsements.
  • License Classifications Guidelines for Those Holding Class B License: According to California commercial driver license classifications guidelines, a driver holding Class B license can drive all vehicles that are listed under Class C, a single vehicle whose GVWR is more than 26,000lbs, a 3-axle vehicle that weighs more than 6,000 lbs, and any bus (except a trailer bus) or farm labor vehicle with endorsements. A driver with this license can tow a single vehicle that has a GVWR of 10,000lbs or less and any vehicle that a driver with a Class C license can tow.
  • License Classifications Guidelines for Those Holding Class C License: A driver, who holds a commercial Class C license can drive any vehicle that is licensed to carry hazardous materials requiring placards, provided he also holds a HAZMAT endorsement.
